Calbee Inc., alongside Calbee Potato Co. and Prothleaf Co., has launched a trial food and agriculture education program titled Potato Bag Food Education. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Calbee Potato Chips, the initiative allows elementary school students to grow and harvest potatoes using soil-filled grow bags and then turn them into homemade potato chips.
Around 160 students from Nakazato Elementary School in Tokyo and Toyosaki Elementary School in Osaka participated in the program, which ran from March to July 2025. The children planted and grew Poroshiri, a Calbee-developed potato variety, using the Potato Bag system—soil made from 100% plant-based materials like coconut husks.
The program aims to educate the next generation on the food cycle from farm to snack, combining environmental awareness and hands-on learning. Calbee plans to evaluate the results and explore expanding the initiative nationwide.
