Calbee, Inc. will release a special limited-edition product, “Kataage Potato Plum Flavor,” from its popular “Kataage Potato” line, renowned for its firm texture that becomes even tastier with each bite. The new flavor will be available at convenience stores nationwide from Monday, March 16, 2026, and will roll out to other retail locations from Monday, March 23, 2026, with sales scheduled to end in mid-June 2026.
This seasonal release uses Nanko plums from Kishu, with 90% of the plum powder made from this prized variety. By combining the sourness and umami of plums with the classic, firm Kataage Potato texture, this product offers a special flavor that can only be enjoyed at this time of year.
“Kataage Potato” is made using the traditional kamaage method, which originated in the United States in the mid-19th century. First introduced exclusively in Hokkaido on November 8, 1993, it expanded nationwide in 2005 and has been a long-selling favorite for over 30 years. Thickly sliced potatoes are carefully fried to create a unique, firm texture, allowing consumers to enjoy the full richness of the potato flavor. Standard flavors include “Light Salt,” “Black Pepper,” and “Roasted Seaweed,” alongside limited-time and regional varieties.
The “Plum Flavor,” released every early spring, has been consistently well-received. This year, the flavor has been enhanced by using two sizes of plum powder to intensify the tartness, satisfying even dedicated plum enthusiasts. The packaging highlights plum blossom icons and silhouettes, clearly marking it as a seasonal limited edition.
By combining the high-quality plum taste with the classic Kataage Potato crunch, Calbee continues to deliver a premium snacking experience that celebrates seasonal flavors and delights consumers year after year.
